The Fenn School Oral History Project
The 2014 -15 Senior Project
The Fenn School Senior Project is open to all interested—and committed—students in the senior class who wish to be a part of a year-long hands-on activity that is a dynamic, collaborative and creative undertaking that seeks to teach new skills and engage a select group of students in a unique and empowering adventure of learning and community in their senior year at Fenn.
The working title for this year is “The Fenn School Oral History Project.” The core idea is for the boys, working in teams, to identify Fenn Alumni, former teachers, and other individuals with an enduring tie to The Fenn School and to create artistically compelling and thematically unified video essay “shorts” (five minutes or less in length) that capture, in the words and images of the subject, the more profound and memorable takeaways he or she “remembers” from their days at Fenn. The capstone event in the spring will be a gallery showcase of these video essays that is open to the school community and the greater public of our area. Additionally, the boys will create a video documentary website to collate, curate, and archive these documentaries that will serve as a legacy this project—and the boys—will leave to Fenn.
During our initial meetings in the Fall, the group will learn to use their iPads as powerful and effective video tools. Utilizing the new recording studios built this past summer in the B216 classroom each team will work together to master the technical skills required; moreover, we will learn and practice the personal touches of interviewing and filming a diverse group of subjects in an engaging and comfortable environment.
This is my third year of being a part of the senior project, and I am excited by the possibilities this project presents to enrich and enliven the boys final year at The Fenn School. It is, needless to say, a serious commitment of time and energy for those senior class members who are interested in being a part of the project, and it requires that any interested student commit to attending our meeting sessions in a mature, considered, and thoughtful way. These times will include at least two Tuesday afternoons each month from 3:30-5:00, as well some time used during activity periods and senior time. A schedule will be provided for planning purposes. This said, the senior project is also a time to have fun with peers and to bond with a collective and joyful spirit in a worthy and enlightening endeavor.
Our first meeting will be on Tuesday, October 14th from 3:30-5:00 in room B216. Snacks and refreshments will be provided.
If you are interested in being a part of The Fenn School Oral History Project (and I hope you are) please send me an email stating your interest and affirming your commitment to being a part of the project for the long haul.
Thanks, and I am excited to get started. Please call or email me with any questions or concerns.
Sincerely,
Fitz
