Poetry is work, and if you don’t, poetry won’t. ~Fitz To be a poet you need to first open your eyes, then close them. You need to open your eyes (and your heart) to the time and place and forces that shaped the poet—and, hence the poetry. It is way too easy to say you don’t like something that you don’t understand and/or are unwilling to appreciate. And you need to close your eyes and distill the ether of your deepest and most real thoughts, and in that forge, hammer it into the enduring iron of poetic form--whatever form that takes. It is also too easy to think ‘this is what poetry is,’ or ‘this is the kind of poetry I like,’ and then stubbornly cling to that notion for the rest of your life. To you, all I can say is here is an opportunity to transform and add a preciousness to every moment in your life--to see the world as a sea of meaning in unending waves of metaphor. Poetry is the seed, the flower, the soil, and the sun. Poetry is a window into the soul of humanity across all cultures and all sense of time. Poetry is that punk kid in the corner of the room who blows us all away with the words cast about with reckless beauty. Poetry is work, and if you don’t, poetry won’t. What do you think of this poem? Why do you think I wrote what "I" wrote and then used the poem below as your first poem to read? Comment below in a thoughtful way. Post to here and to the discussion thread on Schoology. O sweet spontaneous O sweet spontaneous earth how often have the doting fingers of prurient philosophers pinched and poked thee ,has the naughty thumb of science prodded thy beauty .how often have religions taken thee upon their scraggy knees squeezing and buffeting thee that thou mightest conceive gods (but true to the incomparable couch of death thy rhythmic lover thou answerest them only with spring) e.e. cummings Here is the essay rubric you should use to craft your mid-year essay. It is a Pages document that you should be able to one in Pages on your iPad. I tried it on Charlie's iPad and it worked well.
The essay is due by the end of the exam period on Wednesday turned in as a Notability pdf. Good luck, have fun, and let me know early if you are having any trouble uploading or writing this essay. I am at a workshop on Tuesday: In class work on your videos--or if you are finished, help your classmates who need some last minute help. ***Sign up for the Schoology winter term using this code: JFHDJ-DTHQT You might not be as psyched as me. I am psyched to see what heroic shape your video takes in its final metamorphosis. You might just be psyched to be done and clambering in to the lifeboat before the metaphorical ship sinks beneath you. And done you need to be by tomorrow. Hopefully, you are already done--especially after your day off on Wednesday and your day off today! (a day that I did not have off...). When your video is completed, upload it to your blog. You do not need to include the text, but you can if you want. About the worst thing you can do is wait to try and upload your video until the last minute. If you are in any doubt about how to do it, you'd best figure it out tomorrow. There are plenty of your classmates who know how. It's actually quite easy. Here are a few ways:
You might know other ways, but it is up to you to figure it out beforehand. We will show the completed videos in class. I am psyched! Thanksgiving |
